This showcase displays items excavated from the Big Spring Park in Fincastle. It was donated to the Botetourt County Museum of History and Culture by Sandy Lucas. He found coins, buttons, thimbles and other artifacts in the park and along the new walkway that has been created. The trail starts along Back Street and goes to the ball field closest to Breckinridge Elementary School. There are plans for an outdoor classroom, fruit and nut orchard, an historical interpretation plaza and signage close to the present day gazebo. There is a bridge over the creek and wildlife to view. The Big Spring served as a place to get clean water since its use by Native Americans. Later it made the area a popular crossroad for early settlers. The location was included in the acreage donated by Israel Christian to make up the original boundaries of Fincastle. It was part of a land grant to Christian by King George III. Winter is an excellent time of the year to search for fossils and find hidden artifacts.
