The James River boys opened their spring soccer season Monday at home and dropped a 5-1 decision to visiting Nelson County.

“We know we still have a lot of work to do,” said coach Jared Whiting. “From start to finish we never really settled into our game. We have a lot of players who have not played soccer or have been away from soccer for years and it’s going to take a couple games to get back in the swing of things.”

Matthew Alderson scored River’s goal. It came off a set piece direct kick.

The Knights will return to action with a “back-to-back.” They’re home against Riverheads on Thursday, then on Friday they have a rematch with Nelson County in Staunton. A trip to Northside in Roanoke County follows next Tuesday, March 19.

“We have strong athletes and a team full of heart, so I have no doubt we will get it worked out once we get some games under our belts,” said Whiting. “We saw some good things and we saw some things we need to work on. A couple days of practice and we should see some big improvements for our next game.”
