The Lord Botetourt soccer teams had a tough time last week as both the girls and boys suffered shutout losses.

The boys were edged at Glenvar last Thursday, 1-0, to fall to 0-4 on the season. The Highlanders remained undefeated with the win, sweeping the season series from LB. A highlight for LB was a diving save on a Highlander penalty kick by JB Cook to keep the game within reach.

“It was a hard fought match against the reigning 2A state champs,” said LB coach Taylor Leonard.

A day prior the boys hosted Christiansburg and dropped a 5-3 decision to the Blue Demons. Kalob Daniels scored early in the game to give LB a 1-0 lead off a cross from Will Hall, but the Demons responded with four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead.

Hall scored late in the half to cut the lead to 4-2 at intermission, and Will opened the second half with a score to bring LB to within a goal at 4-3. However, Christiansburg was able to keep the Cavs at bay for the remainder of the game and added an insurance goal for the 5-3 final.

The girls fell to 1-3 when they fell to Blacksburg in Daleville last Friday, 4-0. It was the third time the girls have been shutout this season, including twice against the Bruins.

“We played well but made some careless mistakes that caused two of the goals,” said LB coach Giuseppe D’Arpa.

Both the boys and girls will open Blue Ridge District play this week. On Tuesday the girls were scheduled to host Staunton River with the boys playing the Golden Eagles in Moneta. On Thursday the girls are at William Byrd and on Friday the boys will host the Terriers.
