The James River soccer teams will be back on the pitch Thursday to take on Alleghany opponents. The girls will be in Springwood and the boys will be at Clifton Middle School for Three Rivers District matches.

The local teams have had a light schedule in the past week. The boys had a Monday game with Radford postponed and they haven’t played since April 15 at Patrick County.

The girls had one game in the past week, as they were able to play at Radford Monday where they took a 4-1 loss.

The River girls conceded an early goal and trailed 1-0 at the half. After intermission the Bobcats scored early to increase their lead to 2-0.

The Knights developed several attacks in the second half, keeping the game interesting, but the Bobcat back line proved to be tough to penetrate.  At the midpoint of the period Radford scored again to make it 3-0. Then, despite facing a daunting disadvantage and a tough defense, the Knights would not give up, continuing to work in the offensive end of the field.  With 16 minutes on the clock Rhaya Kitt finished, knocking in a rebound from a Sophia Martin shot to cut the lead to 3-1.  The goal added energy and some excitement, but the Knights were unable to add to the score and Radford converted in the closing minutes for the 4-1 final. James River keeper Kylee Aaron had 10 saves on the night.

After Thursday’s games with Alleghany the Knights will play Carroll County on Monday with the boys at home and the girls in Hillsville.
