Houston Allen Otey Sr. was born October 27, 1946 and ended his earthly journey on April 27, 2024. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Otey; mother, Kathlene Burns Otey; brother, Frank Otey; and sister, Ann Otey.
Houston was a soldier in the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam as well as the Army Reserve. He worked for Hancock Steel for 17 years before beginning his own business. The name “Big O” was generated from this entrepreneurship. Houston was a devoted husband and father and the backbone of the family. He was a Dallas Cowboy fan right down to the end!
Those left to cherish in his memory are his devoted wife of 54 years, Mary Welch Otey; sons, Houston (Tonya) Otey Jr. and Tony (Vonzella) Otey; grandchildren, Alysa, Briona, Trinity and Tiffany; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Ava, Lala and Maleia; siblings, Jean, Sam, Barbara and Ronnie; brother-in-law, Gary Welch; sister-in-law, Charlene Toliver; special friend and “brother,” James Hickenbotham; along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends at Rader Funeral Home on Friday, May 3, 2024 from 10:30 until 11 a.m. A funeral service will follow in the chapel of Rader Funeral Home at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Monte Brown officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens.
