What is AT Vol. II? It stands for “Around Town Volume II,” a new book for which Historic Fincastle, Inc. (HFI) is gathering information. HFI is in the process of collecting pictures and information that highlight Fincastle from 1950 until 2000. There is a box in the Fincastle Library where you can loan your pictures of this time frame. Please include your name and phone number and a brief description of the picture – people or buildings. All pictures will be considered to include, but they may not be selected of the book.

The book will have five sections:

  1. Growing Up in Fincastle:  If you and or your children grew up in Fincastle, those are the pictures HFI wants to include. What was it like growing up or raising a family in Fincastle? What were the pluses and the minuses?  Do you have some good stories to tell?  There will also be memories of the Bicentennial Pageant in 1970. Do you have any?
  2. Notable People:  HFI is looking for people you remember who were around town during part of the second half of the 20th century.  Please include a picture, the person’s name, birthday, and death day if applicable, if you know it.  Also, include a sentence or two about why they were “notable.”
  3. Listings of People:  For this section, lists like “Mayors and Town Council Members” or “Grocery Stores and Gas Stations in the Town.”  These lists might take some research, but HFI will need help doing this.  Are you interested in research?
  4. Pictures of “Then and Now.” For example, “Then”: The Dime Store and “Now”: Dee’s restaurant.  (Remember the time frame, before 2000.) Of course, today the building is office space, but that didn’t happen before 2000.
  5. History of HFI:  How and why was it formed?  Who helped set the groundwork?  Festivals of the past?  Houses that have been on the Home Tours, etc.

If you want to talk to someone about some of your pictures or memories of this time frame, contact Patsy Dickerson at psdicke@yahoo.com or 540-460-4597. HFI welcomes your help with this exciting project.
