The Lord Botetourt boys soccer team is hitting its stride with the post-season just around the corner. The Cavaliers defeated two Blue Ridge District opponents in the past week to improve to 5-1-2 in the district and 5-7-2 overall.

Last week in Daleville the Cavs played host to Staunton River in the third annual Kevin Boeren Memorial Soccer Game. The Cavaliers got the night started with two early goals from Andres Barroso Fossi. LB had another chance to extend the lead with a penalty kick but the kick hit off the crossbar.

Five minutes into the second half, Kalob Daniels trickled a pass to the middle of the box for Robbie Sanchez to give LB the 3-0 lead. Deeper into the half, the Cavaliers had a corner kick from Barroso Fossi that landed right at the top of the 18, where Ryan Mosdell hit a strike far post, top net to give the Cavaliers a 4-0 lead.

Within a couple minutes, LB had another corner kick attempt and Jacob Malue perfectly placed the ball to Isaac Alderman, who headed the ball into the back of the net to complete the 5-0 shutout win.

On Friday the Cavaliers traveled to William Byrd for another district showdown. The Cavaliers kept their foot on the gas from the previous game as Alderman was able to draw a penalty kick in the first half. Daniels took the penalty kick attempt and gave the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead into halftime.

LB came out fast in the second half with a ball played up to Alderman where he fought for the ball against the Terrier defender, won the ball and took the keeper on one-on-one. Alderman found the bottom corner to give the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead.

The Terriers answered back with a goal of their own from inside the 18, but the Cavaliers came right back with Sanchez hitting a shot that bounced off the keeper’s hands and Danny Kidd was there for the rebound to make it 3-1. Byrd knocked another one in during the final minutes but it wasn’t enough and the Cavaliers won the match, 3-2.

Botetourt was scheduled to host district leader William Fleming on Tuesday, and wrap up the regular season with a home game against Northside Friday.
