The James River baseball team is scheduled to end the season Thursday when the Knights play at Radford. The Three Rivers District does not have an end-of-the-season tournament and River did not qualify for the Region 2C tourney.
The Knights are looking to sweep the season series from Radford after winning in Springwood last week, 2-0. It was “Senior Night” and the Knights honored three seniors, Gabe Staton, Zeal Hammons and Ethan Sherman.
“It’s always a great feeling to get a ‘W’ on Senior Night,” said coach Chance Henry. “It was a pleasure to be able to coach them their senior year and create relationships with them right before they enter the real world.”
Hammons got the start on the mound and pitched three and a third two-hit innings, striking out six. Kody Park finished up the shutout with three and two-thirds one-hit innings.
“This game was all about competing on the mound,” said Henry. “Zeal Hammons gave us quality innings and competed in the zone and Kody Park came in and finished the game in an economical manner by giving up a lot of weak contact.”
Hunter Mays was three-for-three to lead the offense and Hunter and brother Jeremiah scored the two runs for the Knights.
“Hunter Mays has really been hot at the plate for us and carried us in this game,” said Henry. “He’s really put a strong finish on the year and has continued to put up hard contact.”
The Knights were at Patrick County Friday and Glenvar Monday and came out on the short end of 11-1 scores to drop to 2-17 on the season.
“We have one more game left this year and are hopeful to go out on a positive note,” said Henry.
