This salt cellar was recently donated to the Botetourt County Historical Society by Deborah Hedrick, who grew up in Fincastle. It is thought to be made of uranium glass and is very unique. Uranium glass, also known as Vaseline glass, dates back to the 19th century and gets its distinct greenish-yellow glow from uranium oxide. It was popular in decorative items until the 1940s. The glass glows under UV light but is safe to own and admire. This piece is on view alongside other decorative glass in the museum’s Parlor Gallery downstairs.
