The Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office announces its participation in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Operation Crash Reduction campaign.
As the long holiday weekend approaches, many motorists will hit the road in pursuit of one last warm-weather adventure. Unfortunately, increased driving often leads to a rise in motor vehicle crashes, particularly in our region–NHTSA’s Region 3–which includes Virginia, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina and West Virginia. This region experiences some of the highest traffic crash-related fatalities in the nation during this holiday weekend. In Virginia alone, October proved to be one of the deadliest months from 2018 to 2023, with 553 traffic fatalities recorded during that period.
The Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office will join other law enforcement partners in NHTSA’s Region 3 by participating in Operation Crash Reduction, running from October 11-14. The campaign focuses on speed enforcement and promoting seatbelt use to save lives and prevent injuries from traffic crashes.
Speeding is a dangerous and aggressive behavior that accounts for more than one-quarter of all traffic-related fatalities nationwide. There are many reasons drivers choose to speed, but running late, heavy traffic, or simply disregarding the safety of others are the main culprits behind this risky behavior. Much like impaired driving, speeding is a selfish choice that can have deadly consequences.
“The outcomes of speeding can be deadly,” said Sheriff Matt Ward. “By participating in Operation Crash Reduction, we aim to prevent tragedies before they happen and make our roads safer for everyone.”
During this awareness campaign, the Sheriff’s Office will conduct high visibility enforcement of traffic laws to raise awareness and educate drivers and passengers about the dangers of speeding, seatbelt use, distracted driving, “left lane loafing,” and other risky driving behaviors on the road.
