James River golfers Landon Bolling and Mason Gilliland are headed to the Class 2 state tournament. Both boys qualified for the state in Monday’s Region 2C tournament, and Bolling was tournament medalist.
River had three boys qualify for the regional at last Thursday’s Region 2C sub-region at the Botetourt Golf & Swim Club. Bolling shot a 79, Gilliland shot 82 and Mason Francis also qualified for the region tournament as an individual with a 92. Elizabeth Johnson had River’s fourth score, a 98, for a team title of 351. That was fourth on the day and 14 strokes off qualifying as a team.
On Monday the Region 2C tournament was held at Great Oaks in Floyd County and Floyd County High won the tournament with a team score of 310 to advance to the state tournament. The state will be held next Monday, October 14, also at Great Oaks. Radford finished second in the region with a team score of 342 and also advances to the state.
Bolling was medalist at the region with a 75, and he was named Region 2C Player of the Year. Gilliland shot a 78 and also advances to the state as an individual, earning All-Region status.
“The boys were fabulous today,” said coach Donna Cox after Monday’s round. “These two young men have worked so hard for these honors. It is such a pleasure to watch them on the golf course.”
