The James River girls will wrap up their volleyball regular season Thursday with a match at Glenvar. The Three Rivers District tournament is next week but details weren’t available at press time.
River took a 14-7 record to Patrick County on Tuesday as they prepare for post-season play. Last Friday in Springwood the Knights hosted Patrick and took a four-set win over the Cougars, 25-15, 25-9, 23-25 and 25-15.
“The girls served aggressively and played great defense,” said coach Linsey Firebaugh. “What ultimately won this game for us was our balanced hitting. We had multiple players that got kills when we needed it. All the girls trusted each other and it showed on the court.”
Caitlin Canada led with 15 kills while Sydnee Breeding had 12. Konner Myers contributed a team high 27 digs and Brea Anduiza had 35 assists and four serving aces.
Last Wednesday at home the girls beat Radford in three sets, 25-19, 25-18 and 25-21. Ava Thacker had a dozen kills and 25 digs while Canada had 11 kills. Myers had 32 digs.
“Our goal for this game was to keep Radford out of system as much as possible,” said Firebaugh. “We did a good job of serving aggressively and taking advantage of any free balls we received. The girls have improved so much at executing first ball attempts.”
