As Halloween approaches, the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind the community to prioritize safety while enjoying the festivities. This is a time for fun and spooky creativity, but it’s essential to keep safety in mind for everyone involved, trick-or-treaters, parents, partygoers, and homeowners alike.
Each year, Halloween is celebrated with trick-or-treating, parties, candy, and sometimes, drinking. Unfortunately, Halloween also involves potentially deadly crashes, and impaired drivers on the road. In 2022, nearly half of all crash fatalities during Halloween night were alcohol related. For those attending Halloween parties, designate a sober driver and plan ahead for a safe and sober ride home.
Drivers should be aware there will be more pedestrians on the roads. Drivers need to be alert for trick-or-treaters and other pedestrians. Slow down and scan the road. Remember – slower speeds save lives. Watch for young trick-or-treaters in unexpected places. Children may be unaware of traffic and dart into the street unexpectedly.
Trick-or-treaters, always stick with your group or adult! There’s safety in numbers. Wearing bright, reflective costumes and carrying flashlights or glow sticks will help ensure you are seen by drivers. Remember to use sidewalks when available, cross at corners, and look both ways before crossing the street. Before you indulge in those tasty treats, have an adult check the candy safety.
