The James River volleyball team defeated Radford in three sets Monday to earn a spot in the Three Rivers District championship tonight. Alleghany will host the championship after defeating Carroll County in the other semifinal, also in three sets.
With the win River improved to 18-7 on the season. Only the top four teams in the district qualified for the tournament and River was the second seed behind Alleghany.
River finished up the regular season with two wins last week. The Knights beat Patrick County in three, 25-7, 25-19 and 25-16. Caitlin Canada had nine kills, Ayden Jennings had 22 assists and four aces and Brea Anduiza had eight kills.
On Thursday the Knights won at Glenvar in four, 25-21, 23-25, 25-14 and 25-18. Konner Myer had 18 digs, Jadyn Miller had 16 kills and Anduiza had 14 kills and four aces. Jennings had 41 assists.
“Both of these were solid wins for us,” said River coach Linsey Firebaugh. “We’re missing one of our outsides, so we were working with a new lineup. The girls played well as a team.”
The Region 2C tournament is next week and River will be included, but seedings were yet to be determined at press time.
