Truman Frederick Austin, 83, of 501 Broken Arrow Lane, Covington, died on Thursday, October 31, 2024 at LewisGale Hospital – Alleghany, Low Moor.
Truman was born on June 12, 1941 in Botetourt County to the late Hiram Simmons Austin, Sr. and Delphine Barger Austin. He served in the United States Army (Military Police) and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. He was employed by Westvaco as a timekeeper for 35 years and was a member of Forest Grove Baptist Church in Eagle Rock. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed playing softball.
In addition to his parents, Truman was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tiffany Olivia Kimberlin.
He is survived by his wife, Sally “Joann” Teaford Austin of Covington; three daughters, Pamela Austin Hall (Tony Shiflett) of Covington, Carolyn Teaford Clarkson (Bruce) of Greensboro, N.C., and Sara Dell Timis of New Market; a son, Steve Austin of Covington; a sister, Betty Jo Austin Barger of Eagle Rock; two brothers, Hiram Austin, Jr. (Barbara) of Eagle Rock and Raymond Austin (Connie) of Clifton Forge; seven grandchildren, one step-granddaughter, five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 at 2 p.m. in Forest Grove Baptist Church, Eagle Rock, with the Rev. Jerry Marsh officiating. Interment was in Forest Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends on Monday from 4 until 6 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge.
The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Boiling Spring Fire and Rescue.
