The Lord Botetourt baseball season ended with a loss to Abingdon in the Region 3D semifinals last week in Abingdon. The Cavs fell one win short of making a trip to the state tournament.
Abingdon scored seven runs in the second inning, then poured it on for a 17-1 win. The Cavaliers were the number three seed in the tournament and Abingdon was second seeded, and the Falcons went on to win the region with a 15-2 rout of Northside in the championship game.
LB managed just four hits against Abingdon, one each by Hunter Duke, Caleb Franklin, Patrick Kepler and Logan Wood. Kepler took the loss on the mound with Nick Lancaster hurling one inning of relief and Duke coming on to get the final out.
“We didn’t play well,” said LB coach Todd Smith. “They’re good, and it just wasn’t our day.”
The loss ended LB’s season with a record of 16-5. The Cavaliers, who graduate seven seniors, were Blue Ridge District champions.
“I thought we had a good season,” said Smith. “I hate for them to go out like this, but they have a lot to be proud of.”
