Eagle Rock will host its annual Ag Day celebration on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Eagle Rock Library. The event offers a lively mix of agriculture-themed activities, educational exhibits, and community engagement suitable for all ages.
Visitors can meet animals from Jeffry’s Funny Farm, explore hands-on displays from 4-H, the Ag Extension Office, and Douthat State Park, try a STEM activity with Beth Leffel from the Eagle Rock Ruritans, and get a close look at equipment and vehicles provided by the Fire Department, VDOT, and James River Equipment. These interactive experiences aim to highlight the importance of agriculture while offering plenty of entertainment for children and adults alike.
A series of special presentations will take place throughout the day. At 10 a.m., a session on soil composting and testing will offer insights into improving soil health. At 11 a.m., attendees can learn about beekeeping and the benefits of bee products. At 12 p.m., a DIY birdhouse workshop will allow participants to build and take home their own birdhouse. Birdhouse kits will be provided, but registration is required due to limited space. Interested participants can sign up online or call the library for more information.
Local organizations will be present with food and fundraising activities. The Eagle Rock Elementary School PTA will begin serving hot dogs and BBQ sandwiches at 11 a.m., while the Eagle Rock Ruritans will host cow chip bingo, adding a lighthearted, competitive element to the day.
While Ag Day shares the date with the Fincastle Festival, the events complement each other well. Those planning to attend the festival are encouraged to make a stop in Eagle Rock to visit with animals, learn about local agriculture, and enjoy some classic community charm.
Ag Day at Eagle Rock offers a unique opportunity to celebrate local farming, support community groups, and enjoy a Saturday full of engaging, educational fun. Admission is free and open to the public.
