Michael Albert, a 2016 graduate of James River High School, was denied his senior outdoor season with the Appalachian State Track & Field team in Boone, North Carolina due to the coronavirus.
Albert chose Appalachian State to continue his education after winning both the shot put and discus Group 2A state championships for James River in the spring of 2016. The Buchanan native competed for the Mountaineers for four years both indoors and outdoors in the shot put, weight throw, hammer throw and discus.
This past winter Michael competed in six meets and recorded four top-eight finishes indoors in the shot put, including a season’s best toss of 47’ 5” in the Appalachian Invitational for fifth place.
In his last outdoor season in 2019 he was 12th in the discus in the Sun Belt Championship meet, and that season he set a personal best in that event with a toss of 158’ 5” at the Virginia Grand Prix as he took second place. He was fifth in both the shot and discus at the Charlotte Invitational.
He leaves Appalachian State with indoor personal bests of 49’8.50” in the shot and 49’ 5.5” in the weight throw. His outdoor bests are 48’4.75” in the shot, 150’0” in the hammer throw and 158’5” in the discus.
