A man who served others, Charles Ellis “Charlie” Alford, 94, of Daleville, passed away at The Glebe Monday, November 20, 2023 following a long illness.
Charlie was born in Norlina, N.C., August 2, 1929 and lived in Botetourt County for more than 25 years. He was the son of the late Charles H. and Louise Bobbitt Alford.
Charlie served in The United States Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Philippine Sea. He was employed by Unisys Corporation, enjoyed and was an accomplished wood turner, and was a long-time member of Unity of Roanoke.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Helms Alford; and his brother, Gilbert “Gil” Alford. Sometime following the death of Dorothy, he met someone who brought joy to his heart and life, Libby Carswell, and they became life partners. Charlie is survived by Libby and his brother, Lewis Alford of Wilmington, N.C.
A celebration of a life well lived with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 6 at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road, Daleville with Pastor Gerri McDaniel officiating. A private burial was conducted at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service Wednesday.
