Winnie the Beagle has arrived in Southwest Virginia where he will serve as honorary mascot for American Legion Post 240, Troutville. He is a 1-year-old pup sporting the classic black and tan Beagle colors.
His owner serves with the United States Army and has been called to duty where Winnie cannot accompany him. Through the organization, Dogs On Deployment, Winnie will be fostered by a member of Post 240 until his owner returns. Dogs On Deployment connects a variety of service connected pet owners with temporary foster homes for their pets under eligible situations. This includes pets of various other species as well as dogs. Find out how to become a foster family at www.dogsondeployment.org.
Through the Legion Act of 2019, Congress opened membership in the American Legion to all honorably discharged veterans and also to current active duty personnel. Programs like this and the ongoing Blue Star Banner outreach to military families allow the group to support all veterans.
Winnie hails from Newport News and began his journey west with the assistance of American Legion Post 25 in Newport News.
