Did you know that pumpkins can float? Children of all ages learned that fact as the Blacksburg Aquatic Center became a “floating pumpkin patch” Saturday morning.

BAC staff filled the indoor facility pool with pumpkins and over fifty children swam amongst them. Many children tossed the pumpkins to experience the explosion of water from the dense squash. Under watchful supervision by BAC lifeguards, some children enjoyed testing the pumpkins’ buoyancy by hugging and floating.

After children found their perfect pumpkins, they went into the BAC lobby to decorate. Children used stickers, foam pieces and pipe cleaners to craft pumpkins into silly jack-o-lanterns. Refreshments were served and children left with goodie-bags.

Lilly Ballowe and Grace Wright, both show off their decorated pumpkins at Blacksburg Aquatic Center.

Lynne Krulich, BAC Supervisor, said, “This was our first time offering this special event. I think was all worth it.”

The Blacksburg Parks and Recreation Director, Dean Crane, visited the event and was impressed by the crowd of families who had partaken in this unique aquatic fall festival.
