Bruce Martin Barrows, 51, formerly of Fincastle, died unexpectedly as a result of a battle with diabetes.

Bruce was born December 26, 1971 in Utica, N.Y., and lived in Botetourt County since 1976 before moving to Wilmington, N.C. in 2019.  Bruce was a 1991 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School, served in The United States Navy and had attended Woodland Church as a child and Grace Bible Church as an adult.

He worked for his father at R&B Aircraft for a number of years, volunteered for Grace Bible Camp, worked for Norfolk Southern Railroad for a time, and worked for Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in Greer, S.C.  He enjoyed the outdoors, running, hiking, bicycling, and fishing.  Bruce ran one marathon, participated in the Marine Corps Mud Run several times, and hiked half of the Appalachian Trail.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Ann Martin Barrows, and aunt, Meredith Martin.  Bruce is survived by his son, Andrew “Drew” Barrows of Fincastle; his father, Robert E. Barrows of Fincastle; sisters: Heather (Chris) Horner and Tony (Mike) Morris, all of New Hanover County, North Carolina, and Maria (Dean) Harris of Fincastle; many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service with military honors was held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 20 at PleasantDale Memorial Park, 3732 Breckinridge Mill Road, Fincastle with Pastor Jay Robinette officiating.  The family received friends from 12-2 p.m. Monday, March 20 at Rader Funeral Home, Daleville.
