The anticipated showdown between two undefeated Blue Ridge District girls’ basketball teams didn’t happen last week as cold weather iced out the game between Lord Botetourt and Staunton River. Both teams are still undefeated and expected to battle for district supremacy along with William Fleming in a loaded BRD.
Botetourt also had a game at William Byrd snowed out last Friday but the Cavaliers managed to get in a home game with Blacksburg, and LB took a 53-26 win to improve to 11-0 overall. With the win the Cavs swept the non-district home-and-home series with the Bruins.
“I was really glad we were able to get a game in during the crazy week of weather,” said LB coach Renee Favaro. “I was not happy with our defensive effort last matchup with Blacksburg, so we really harped on wanting to improve that. We were able to hold them to 26 points and 22 percent shooting, so mission accomplished there.”
Madilyn Winterton led the Cavs with 22 points and she also had seven steals and 18 deflections. Maddie Caron had 18 points and nine rebounds, and Abby Kingery had six assists and half a dozen steals.
The Cavaliers were scheduled to host William Fleming on Tuesday but results were too late for publication. That was expected to be a good one as the Colonels come into the week at 8-2.
On Friday, LB will host Northside, followed by a trip to Rocky Mount to play Franklin County next Tuesday, January 21.
