The final leg of the Blue Ridge District regular season golf tour was scheduled for Tuesday of this week at the Mariner’s Landing course. The match was scheduled to be nine holes, which will likely keep Lord Botetourt from having a shot at catching Franklin County for the regular season title.
Botetourt trailed the Eagles by 29 strokes heading into Tuesday’s match, the sixth of the regular season. The fifth leg of the tour was held at Blue Hills in Roanoke County last week and the Cavaliers needed to make up some ground on William Byrd’s home course, which is also quite familiar to the Botetourt golfers. However, Franklin and LB finished in a dead heat, with 308 each, as the Eagles held their lead.
“We played much better at Blue Hills, but unfortunately so did Franklin County,” said LB coach Todd Smith. “With the tie that day we are still down and probably can’t catch them with only a nine-hole match on Tuesday left for the regular season.”
LB’s Ashton Harper was the medalist at Blue Hills with a three-under-par 68. Sam Fansler of Franklin was second with a 70 and Nick Crawford of Northside was third with a 74. Those three are one-two-three in the season individual standings as well.
Also scoring for Lord Botetourt at Blue Hills were Cadyn Bowles at 79, Xavier Shelton, who moved up to seventh overall with an 80, and Hunter Duncan at 81.Tyler Meade had an 84.
LB will host Salem and Christiansburg in a non-district nine hole match today. The Blue Ridge District tournament is scheduled to be played at Blue Hills on Monday, September 19.
