On Tuesday, the Botetourt County Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) voted 5-0 in favor of overturning Botetourt County Zoning Administrator Drew Pearson’s July 7, 2021 letter of determination regarding a condition which required site plan approval of the Rocky Forge wind project by 12 months for the date of the granting of a May 26, 2020 Special Exemption Permit (SEP).

The hearing took place in the auditorium at the Botetourt County Administrative offices in Daleville.

The board listened to arguments from both Botetourt County Attorney Mike Lockaby and APEX Clean Energy Attorney Robert L. Loftin regarding the county’s determination in May that the wind project’s Special Exceptions Permit (SEP) expired.

Loftin shared his time with Del. Terry Austin, who shared his thoughts in favor of the project and spoke about the efforts the General Assembly.

The current members of the BZA are Steve Kidd (Chairman – Buchanan District representative), Hunter Young (Amsterdam), S.E. Cash (Blue Ridge), Darren P. Hill (Fincastle), and J. Scott Caldwell (Valley).
