By Katie Grace Barrett, Botetourt 4-H Livestock Club Historian
On February 25 and 26, Schylar, Sawyer, and Stella Zollman competed in the Block & Bridle Stockman’s and Livestock Judging contests at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
They placed fourth in the Virginia 4-H Junior Teams. This is a big accomplishment considering that Botetourt County 4-H Livestock Club hasn’t recently had a competing team, and they placed fourth in the whole state.
When asked what was the hardest part, all three 4-H’ers answered, “Judging the meats.”
Schylar and Stella said, “When you judge the beef, they want you to judge it on the cutability and the marbling.”
Sawyer said that he learned “how to use my time wisely.”
When asked how they prepared, Schylar and Stella both said they “prepared by watching YouTube Videos.” Sawyer practiced by completing worksheets from previous years of the competition.
When asked if they were planning to compete next year all three said, “Yes!”
Congratulations to Schylar, Sawyer, and Stella Zollman for placing fourth in the Virginia State Meats Judging competition.
