The Lord Botetourt and James River swim teams closed out the pre-holiday season with a meet at Alleghany on Monday night. The meet included LB, River, Carroll County and Alleghany.

James River’s boys beat Alleghany but lost to LB and Carroll, while the girls beat Carroll but lost to LB and Alleghany. River senior Luke Martin placed first in the 50 Free and 100 Free while freshman Sydney Wilson placed second in the 100 Fly. The girls Medley Relay placed third and had a 14-second time improvement.

“The team swam well and had several personal records,” said coach Ashley Swanby.

The Lord Botetourt team swept all three opponents and had a good night. That followed a big night on December 11 when the Cavaliers hosted William Byrd and William Fleming. The LB boys and girls swept both Byrd and Fleming in that meet at Hollins University with 37 new personal best times.

First places for the girls included Miranda Kirtley in the 200 Free and 100 Fly, achieving state cuts in both.  Olivia Bray won the 200 IM and 50 Free with state cuts and set the school record in the 200 IM at 2:11.97. Madelynn Sprouse won the 500 Free and Brooke Heptinstall set a new school record in winning the 100 Breast in 1:12.93. LB also won the 200 Medley, 200 Free and 400 Free Relays.

First places for the boys were Seth Renaud in the 200 Free and 100 Back, Ryan Spangler in the 100 Fly, Cooper Dehr in the 500 Free and Michael Pigeon in the 100 Breast. The boys also won the 200 Medley, 200 Free and 400 Free Relays.

“We had some really awesome swims,” said coach Ashley Safrit.

LB will be back in action January 4 against Salem at the Salem YMCA while James River returns to the water January 8 at Hollins University to celebrate “Senior Night.”
