A recent Botetourt County newsletter continued its promise to update the community about its recent developments across government, public safety, infrastructure, and recreation. The April Board of Supervisors meeting highlighted major strides in community investment, employee recognition, and preparations for future growth. The FY26 county budget was approved without a tax rate increase, with more than 64% dedicated to education and public safety—an affirmation of the county’s focus on essential services. Finance Director Katie Davis was acknowledged for her transparency and dedication during the budgeting process.
The board welcomed several new team members, including Tom Edwards, Codey Ryan, John Kravitz, and Jonathan Boggs, while recognizing Blake Winand for his leadership in Maintenance. Economic Development Director Ken McFadyen was honored as he transitions to a new role in Alleghany County. Department of Social Servoces Director Dr. Racquel Rogers also provided an overview of vital community services.
Additional agenda items included a Virginia Department of Transportation update, approval of a one-time bonus for constitutional office employees, and discussions on a zoning ordinance amendment to permit food trucks. EMS Chief Jason Ferguson proclaimed May 18-24 as Emergency Medical Services Week, recognizing EMS personnel. Approval was also granted for a construction management contract with Skanska, while Construction Manager Rich Evans shared updates on the Circuit Courthouse project. Economic Development Week and Building Safety Month were formally recognized as well.
Construction of the new Circuit Courthouse in Fincastle continues to progress. A dedicated website provides residents with updates on the project, reinforcing transparency and public engagement (www.botetourtva.gov/707/Circuit-Courthouse-in-Fincastle).
On May 19, over 60 builders, contractors, and DIY enthusiasts gathered for Botetourt’s first-ever Building Safety Month training. Attendees learned about code updates, networked with the Community Development team, and enjoyed food provided by The Fishn’ Pig, soon opening in Daleville. The event was supported by Capps Home Building Supply.
Public safety efforts expanded with the April 26 bystander AED training hosted by Botetourt Fire & EMS and Daleville Baptist Church in partnership with the Compress & Shock Foundation. Forty-one community members participated, learning life-saving CPR and AED techniques.
Botetourt Fire & EMS continues to welcome volunteers. The process includes submitting an application online, followed by screenings and training provided at no cost to applicants (www.botetourtva.gov/713/Volunteer-Recruitment).
In a bid to improve flood preparedness, the county installed new creek and river gauges as part of its Flood Indication Mapping Initiative. Funded by the RISE Project and developed with Floodmapp and GreenStream Technologies, these devices provide real-time water data and enhance emergency response capabilities.
Recreation enhancements are also on the horizon. On June 6, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at Blue Ridge Park to celebrate the newly resurfaced dual-use pickleball/tennis courts and upgraded basketball courts. A second celebration will take place on June 21 at Buchanan Recreation Park to unveil additional court improvements. Both events will include games, refreshments, giveaways, and community engagement activities.
Outdoor enthusiasts can look forward to the third annual BOCO Wild event on June 14 at Buchanan Town Park. This outdoor recreation expo will feature fishing, hiking, boating education, wildlife exhibits, and more. Last year’s event drew over 650 participants.
Youth baseball, T-ball, and softball seasons are in full swing at the Botetourt County Sports Complex. Registration for the 2025 fall sports season opens June 1.
The Summer Reading Challenge is also underway, following a kickoff event that drew over 300 attendees. Families are encouraged to join the initiative and explore resources available through the county library system.
Botetourt County continues to blend progress with community spirit, offering residents a vibrant calendar of events, new amenities, and numerous ways to get involved and stay informed.
