The Botetourt County Historical Society (BCHS), in collaboration with Botetourt Preservation Partnership (BPP), has announced “Botetourt Day,” a special event to be held on Sunday, August 25, at historic St. John’s Episcopal Church in Richmond. Botetourt’s Delegate Terry Austin is scheduled to attend.
Part of the day will include a re-enactment of a meeting of the Second Virginia Convention –
As tensions grew between the Colonies and Great Britain in the 1770s, Virginia held a series of meetings to organize its protests against the mother country. In March of 1775, the Second Virginia Convention was held at St. John’s, then called Henrico Parish Church. Patrick Henry, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Peyton Randolph and other prominent Virginians were delegates to the convention. Here, Patrick Henry embodied the spirit of the Revolution on March 23, 1775, with his words, “Give me liberty…or give me death!”
This unique occasion promises a day filled with historical exploration and community connection, including an exclusive tour of the state’s Capitol Building.
To facilitate participation, BCHS has arranged a charter bus to transport residents from Fincastle to Richmond. This convenient transportation option ensures that attendees can fully enjoy the day’s activities without the worry of travel logistics.
Tickets for the event are $65, which includes round-trip transportation, a ticket for the re-enactment at St. John’s, and the Capitol Building tour. Individuals are responsible for the cost of their own meals. This all-inclusive price provides a fantastic opportunity for residents to experience the rich history of the state capital in the company of friends and neighbors.
