This watercolor painting of the Botetourt Courthouse is displayed in the Botetourt Historical Museum’s Courthouse Room. Prior to that, it was in Godwin Cottage. It was donated to the Botetourt County Historical Society on March 10, 2006, by the Foundation for the Roanoke Valley. The artist, Allen Ingles Palmer, died at 39 when his single engine airplane crashed in 1950 less than a mile from his “Wood’s End” home in Roanoke. He was flying to New York with 35 paintings for his third one-man show. This painting shows everyday life at the courthouse in 1948.
