This leather bound book was owned by General James Breckinridge (1763-1833) and kept in his Fincastle law office, which is now the Botetourt Historical Museum. It is David Hume’s “History of England, from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution in 1688.” There are engraved illustrations in black and white. It was printed in London in MDCCXCI (1791). David Hume (1711-1776) was one of the most important philosophers and historians to write in English during his time. He entered Edinburgh University at the age of 12. Apparently. this book was well read and is in need of repair.
