This copper horse was the trophy awarded to Calvin Austin at the Botetourt County Fair near Fincastle in 1949. That was the last year the fair was held on the fairgrounds off Route 220 near Hawthorne Hall Road. The fair had been held there for 70 years starting in 1879. In 2013 the Botetourt County Fair was resurrected at the Buchanan Town Park and continues today. It was recently held August 2 and 3 to celebrate Botetourt’s rich agricultural heritage. A picture of Calvin Austin and this horse were donated to the Botetourt Museum of History and Culture on June 7, 2024, by Rose M. Barger.
