This is the first and oldest stoplight in Botetourt County. It was hung at the intersection of Main and Roanoke Streets in the Town of Fincastle about 1935. Electricity had come to Fincastle in 1926. The top light has STOP on it. The yellow in the middle has CAUTION and the green light at the bottom says GO. When Fincastle decided the light was no longer effective, about 1950, it was taken down. The Fincastle Fire Department, through Ben Sprinkel, donated this light to the Botetourt County Museum in 2004. The HFI book “Around Town” has a photograph showing the traffic light in use. This and other history books are for sale at the museum in Fincastle.
