Alfred Becky Carper played this alto horn in Fincastle’s first band. He was born on July 28, 1890 and lived until December 19, 1970. Before he was 20, he worked for the Buchanan News. The horn was made by the James Welsh Pepper music company, which was founded in 1876 in Pennsylvania. Today, J.W. Pepper & Son, Inc. is the largest sheet music retailer in the world. Hellen C. Caldwell donated this horn to the Botetourt Museum of History and Culture in 1998 where it is displayed.
