Can our past inspire our future? It certainly has in the way food is cooked. This pipkin is similar to the ones found in Germany as far back as 1200-1400. A pipkin is an earthenware pot used for cooking over low heat from a coal or wood fire. It has three feet, is partially glazed and has a lid. The handle is hollow so that a stick can be inserted to move it around. This pipkin was donated to the Botetourt County Historical Society, Inc. in 2008 by Explore Park after it was de-accessed. Explore Park was a living history museum focused on the early history of Southwest Virginia but lost its funding.
The park transitioned into an equestrian center and outdoor adventure park. It is currently being leased by Roanoke County and is operated by the County’s Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department.
