This African-American quilt is on display in the Botetourt Historical Museum. It was completed in 1990 by the granddaughters of Edward and Ianthia Girty Barnett of Buchanan. The quilt squares represent the 10 children in the family. The quilters included Vivian Woody, Jeannette Brown, Betty Smith, Andrea Williams, Jackie Pierce, Judy Barnett and June White. Quilting was often done as a commemorative item and in a group gathering. One can read the names written on this square. Judy Barnett’s exhibit on Botetourt’s Black history is featured in the museum for the month of February and year-round on a screen in the Courthouse Room.
