This is a mahogany screw book press. The two wooden screws on each side can be tightened on top of the book as shown. It was used in book binding to help keep the covers of the book flat and parallel to the pages while the glue was drying. It was also used to restore warped books damaged by moisture. In 1975, this lovely artifact was donated to the Botetourt County Museum by the General James Breckinridge Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
