June is one of the most popular months for a wedding because of the weather. Nancy Jane Layman Bertholf (1928-2019) donated this reproduction photograph of her parents’ wedding, and showing the wedding fashions of the day, to the Botetourt County Historical Society. The hand-colored black and white picture was taken in 1923. It shows Nancy’s parents, Lowell Nininger Layman (1897-1979) and Margaret Ester Dove (1900-1987) after their wedding which took place in the Cloverdale Church of the Brethren. There are six bridesmaids and groomsmen and three flower girls. Both Lowell and Margaret Layman are buried in the Daleville Cemetery. Dr. Max (1926-2025) and Nancy Bertholf lived in the “pink” house next to the cemetery before they moved to The Glebe. The photo is upstairs in the museum in Fincastle and some of the people have been identified. Photographs are a valuable part of Botetourt’s history and culture.
