Here is a natural rock formation found only in Botetourt County. The bed of rock just north of Fincastle is about 50 feet thick and is composed of quartzite pebbles. This conglomerate is believed to have had its origin as an alluvial cone deposited on the bottom of the prehistoric sea that covered this area millions of years ago. The large polished block was donated to the Botetourt Historical Museum by Lone Star Cement Company, which today is Titan America Roanoke Cement Company, LLC.
