Mark R. Woodie donated this etching to the Botetourt Museum of History and Culture in May of 2024. It is titled “Beckley House: After the Fact” and is dated 1980. Etchings are made on a metal plate, inked and put through a printing press. This is the 35th out of 80 that Mark made.
The Beckley House was built in 1873 as a residence for Brown M. Allen, who was then Clerk of the Botetourt County Court. Built in the “Tuscan Villa” style, the house had tall narrow windows, bracketed cornices, a wrap-around porch and a side bay window. The iron fence is still at 23 S. Roanoke Street, Fincastle, but the house was torn down in 1979. The property is owned by Bank of Fincastle (First Bank today) and is where the Botetourt County Chamber of Commerce is located.
Mark is on the BCHS Board of Directors and a Botetourt Open Studios artist. He will be exhibiting his artwork June 1-2 in the 66th Annual Roanoke Sidewalk Art Show.
