October was Virginia Archaeology Month.
This is a fossil that was found buried in the late 1980s in Botetourt County and donated to the Botetourt Museum of History and Culture. It is hard to imagine that prehistoric Botetourt was once under the ocean, but fossils like this sea shell are found in this area. Archaeology is celebrated every year in Virginia through special events like the BCHS Founder’s Day program last month. Brendan Burke is the only underwater archaeologist for Virginia’s Department of Historic Resources. He showed pictures of the undisturbed artifacts in the Marshall Tunnel.
