This Baltimore chair is a style of wooden fancy side chair from 1815-1820. The back is stenciled. It has rear Sabre legs, a caned seat and an overall gilt decoration. The Botetourt County Museum has two matching ones but one has a broken seat. The one shown here is on display at the Historical Society of Western Virginia in Roanoke where the “Botetourt 250+1” exhibit is featured until November 2. These chairs were originally owned by Catharine Ammen who married Samuel Stoner. When Samuel died at 39, Catharine moved her eight children from Bonsack to Fincastle. Her son R.D. Stoner owned them at Santillane and then they went to Hawthorn Hall where they were used by George and Betsy Holt. In December come see them at the Botetourt County Museum, which is always free seven days a week.
