This blue and white coverlet was produced by weaving a supplemental wool weft over a plain weave cotton foundation in Botetourt. A narrow home loom was probably used so lengths could be sewn together to achieve the width to cover a bed. Patterns were passed down in families or within a community. Although this was donated to the Botetourt County Museum, it is now on loan to the Historical Society of Western Virginia for its exhibit called “Botetourt County: 250+1 Years of Delight.” It is located next to Hotel Roanoke and will be over November 2; see roanokehistory.org.
