Summer is right around the corner, and Botetourt County Libraries and Botetourt County Parks & Recreation have some out-of-this-world events citizens won’t want to miss.
Beginning with the “launch” of the Summer Reading Challenge, the challenge kicked off on Friday, May 12, and runs through Saturday, August 5. This year’s theme is “Finding Your Place in Time and Space,” and will explore the galaxy and beyond through hands-on activities, discussions, and reading. The challenge will feature some incredible incentives, including an all-expenses-paid trip for four to the Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C. plus lots of other great prizes. Find out more about the challenge by visiting www.botetourtva.gov/831/Summer-Learning-Challenge.
Then, save the date for Friday, May 19 at 6 p.m. when Botetourt Libraries and Botetourt Parks & Recreation team up for a night of fun that will make all of Botetourt’s little future astronauts or space lovers happy. They are launching the first Movie in the Park of the season and the Summer Learning Challenge with “Space Jam” on the big outdoor screen at Central Academy Middle School at 6 p.m.
Enjoy the Moon Bounce, face painting, balloon art, airbrush tattoos, Galactic Obstacle Course, and photo ops with a rocket ship. “Space Jam” will play after the festivities, starting at dusk.
At the event, enter giveaways for Summer Learning prizes. Kids can enter to win a remote-control gravity rover or telescope, and families can enter to win an inflatable kayak. Grab a blanket or lawn chair and come out for a night of exploration and fun.
