The Botetourt County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met Saturday, February 17, in the Botetourt Room at The Glebe. Family members and guests joined the DAR members to celebrate Presidents Day.

A memorial service was held for one DAR member who passed away during the past year. Nancy Cleveland had been a member of DAR since July 3, 2007.

Carole Geiger, National Defense Chair for the chapter, shared information on the eight Virginia men who served as President and their roles in the military service to the nation.

Seven new members were inducted into the chapter – a record number for one year! New members are Rhonda Bandy, Valerie Brugh, Gwen Ikenberry, sisters Ginger Lilly and Valerie Lilly, and sisters Adrianna Peevy and Hannah Peevy.

The program was provided by Botetourt native Mike Lee, who entertained all as he played and sang songs from the Revolutionary War era; everyone was enlightened with the history of the songs that he sang. Lee was a member of the Craig County Boys for 29 years and has been teaching music students since 1975.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a women’s service organization whose members can trace their lineage to an individual who contributed to securing American independence during the Revolutionary War. Today’s DAR is dynamic and diverse, with over 185,000 members in 3,000 chapters in the United States and abroad. DAR members annually provide millions of hours of volunteer service to their local communities across the country and world. DAR chapters participate in projects to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Over 1 million members have joined the organization since its founding in 1890.

If you are interested or have questions about joining the chapter, contact Membership Chair Emily Talbot-Guillote via email at eptg1019@gmail.com or Registrar JoElla John, jjohnregistrar@gmail.com. We welcome your interest and are here to help.
