The Botetourt County Democratic Committee has awarded two $1,000 scholarships to local high school seniors.
Levi Miller, a 2023 graduate of James River High School, and Aidan Mayhue, a 2023 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School, were selected from a group of students who entered the annual scholarship competition. Miller and Mayhue were chosen based on the essay portion of their application, in which they were asked to describe “How the Balance of Power in Our Three Branches of Government Preserves Democracy in Our Republic.”
The scholarship competition is non-partisan and independently judged, and applicants may have any political affiliation, GPA or financial status.
This fall, Mayhue will attend the University of Virginia. Outside of class, he has participated in the American Legion Virginia Boys State, Project Forum at Roanoke Valley Governor’s School, and high school concert band. He has also volunteered at Harmony Assisted Living and spent time shadowing an anesthesiologist.
Miller plans to attend Bryan College, where he will study mechanical engineering. His favorite activities outside of class are playing soccer, playing the drums, reading, fishing and going kayaking.
