Botetourt County’s Department of Fire & EMS faced a challenge last week in the face of heavy snow, ice, and rain. The department took to social media last week sharing that fire and EMS resources from all over Botetourt were busy over the course of last Tuesday. The post explained that, while the initial hours of the morning were calm, the day was certainly busy for career and volunteer personnel responding to meet the needs of the Botetourt community during the winter weather event.
There was a total of 31calls for service during the 24-hour period, with 15 being accidents involving motor vehicles (nine of which were on Interstate 81), 13 emergency medical calls, and four other fire-related incidents.
“While the winter weather will slowly dissipate… we will continue to ensure that additional resources are in place to assist with gaining access, as many homes still are not easily accessible due to snow/ice conditions on driveways,” the post shared.
Additionally the county’s Emergency Management component dealt with flooding and high winds in various parts the county over the weekend created by the additional rainfall and excessive moisture already on the ground.
