The Lord Botetourt girls pulled out a tough five-set match over William Byrd last Thursday to remain undefeated in the Blue Ridge District in volleyball. The Cavaliers won 25-17, 20-25, 25-17, 24-26 and 15-13 in Daleville.
After winning the first and third sets Botetourt had the lead in the fourth and appeared to be on the verge of winning at that point. However, the scrappy Byrd girls rallied to steal the fourth set and gave the Cavaliers all they could handle in the fifth and deciding set to 15 before LB pulled out the two-point win in what was a marathon match.
“I hate that we gave up such a big lead in the fourth set against William Byrd but I was proud of how the team finished the match in the fifth set,” said Botetourt coach Julie Conner.
As expected in a five-set match, there were a lot of stats. Nora Spickard had 21 kills, 15 digs and a pair of aces. Julianna Stephenson had eight kills, 17 digs and two aces, while Emma Rice had seven blocks and two kills. Anna Dewease led with 29 digs and had five serving aces. Skylar Morris had 38 assists and 14 digs.
The match was the third in as many nights for the Cavaliers. Last Tuesday they beat Staunton River in three, 25-19, 25-14 and 25-7, and on Wednesday they lost to non-district rival Cave Spring in three in a match that went extra points in all three sets, with the Knights prevailing each time. The final score was 26-24, 28-26 and 26-24 in favor of Cave Spring.
Spickard led the Cavaliers with 13 kills, 10 digs and two aces. Stephenson had 11 kills, 13 digs and an ace and Rice had seven kills and two blocks. Dewease had 23 digs and Morris had 37 assists.
The Cavs come into the week with a 6-0 Blue Ridge District record and an overall mark of 11-5. They were scheduled to play at Northside on Tuesday and on Thursday they’ll host William Fleming in Daleville. Next Tuesday the girls travel to Rocky Mount to play Franklin County and that will be a big one. The Eagles have just one district loss, and that was the first time around against LB.
