The Lord Botetourt girls basketball team is off to a flying start with three wins in the first week. The girls swept the two South Roanoke County teams after opening the season with a win over Blacksburg.
The Cavaliers took a 43-31 win in Blacksburg last Tuesday. Ally Spangler led the Cavs with a dozen points and Taylor Orange had nine.
“This was an ugly game with a lot of turnovers for both teams, but I was glad to see us able to win when we were not even near our best,” said coach Renee Favaro.
A night later the girls had their home opener against Hidden Valley and coasted to a 66-30 win. Grayson Alfano had five three-pointers and scored 16 points, while Spangler put a dozen on the board, all in the first half. Orange had seven assists and Ainsley Anderson had six as LB assisted on 24 of 27 baskets.
“The girls played really well together and everyone chipped in,” said Alfaro.
On Friday in Daleville the Cavs welcomed the other south county team, Cave Spring, and raced to a 47-33 victory. Orange had 14 points, including three threes, and Alfano had 10. Jada Morgan had a career-high 17 rebounds.
“Overall, I will take any week, especially opening week, with three wins,” said Favaro. “Although we have five seniors, the other five are all underclassmen with limited varsity experience, so I felt this week was big for our confidence as a team. Defensively, I have been very pleased; holding every team to the low 30s like we did this past week will always give us a chance to win.”
The Cavaliers were scheduled to host Blacksburg on Tuesday of this week with Floyd coming to Daleville on Thursday.
