The Lord Botetourt girls made it to the Virginia High School League Class 3 state tennis tournament quarterfinals before their season came to an end last Saturday. LB lost to a strong Western Albemarle team in Crozet, 5-1.
“The Western Albemarle ladies were very good and also very kind,” said LB coach Sam Belcher. “I was proud of how our Lady Cavs competed.”
Lord Botetourt’s Reagan Meade played in the Region 3D singles last week and dropped a 6-0, 6-2 match to a Christiansburg opponent.
“She played really well but was outmatched,” said Belcher.
Meade and Zoe Brown represented LB in region doubles and won their first match against Bassett, 6-1, 6-1. They played Abingdon in the semifinals and lost 6-1, 7-5.
“They played their best tennis on the biggest stage they had ever played on,” said Belcher. “I am very proud of them.”
The girls enjoyed their end of season banquet on Sunday. They finished with a team record of 15-3 and qualified for the state tournament for the first time in the history of Lord Botetourt girls tennis.
“It was a storybook season for a first year head coach and his wife,” said Belcher. “We had so much fun coaching this year and we watched the Lady Cavs grow as tennis players and, more importantly, as young women.”
